Some things to know before purchasing; first is that the cameras have a 3 way cable that comes off them with a ethernet plug, reset button and alternate power adapter. The pictures show the cameras with no cables coming off of them so I assumed you would plug the ethernet directly into them, but this wasn’t the case. The ethernet adapter is decently sized, if you wanted to mount the camera directly to a wall you’re going to have to drill a decent sized hole to pull this through, guessing 3/4 at least, maybe larger (not going to be an simple pull either with the 3 way plug). I didn’t want to drill giant holes in my house so instead of doing that I bought some weather-proof outdoor wire junction boxes, drilled the holes through the center and ran the ethernet directly inside the boxes, mounted the camera to the lid and hid the end of the plug and cabling inside the boxes. This way I only had to drill 3/8 holes for the Cat5 cables (you could do 1/4 but Cat5 pulls through simpler with 3/8). This comes with 4 premade 100ft ethernet cables, again if you plot to use included cables plot to drill some decent holes to accommodate the ethernet plugs. I ran my own Cat5 and terminated the cables myself with custom lengths. Beyond that installation was straightforward, run the cables to where to you want cameras, plug them in, turn everything on. My setup had 3 small wire runs and one long one, no attic work, total time installing wire, boxes, cameras was around 7 hours. Network setup was automatic although you can customize. No allen wrench is included to adjust the cameras, thought that was kinda lame. Before installing anything I recommend plugging everything in for a few days and letting everything run, that way if you have a camera fail or the NVR gives you distress you can address it before it’s all hanging up on the side of your house. I was able to get on easily with my Samsung S5, runs smooth as long as I have decent wifi signal strength (my internet connection has a 1Mb upload, the NVR is the only device on the network when being used remotely). I’m able to view remotely with the software on a Windows 7 Pro PC, although with my 1Mb upload I can only stream one cam at a time (as expected). The included mouse is erratic if you don’t use it with a mouse pad, feels kinda cheap. The mouse also has a bright blue led logo on top. I have this setup hidden so I didn’t want lights giving anything away, so I covered the logo on top of the mouse and the front lights on the NVR with black tape (the lights on the front of the NVR are bright as well). The picture quality of the cameras are like other reviews have stated, very excellent during the day and so-so at night (check the reviews for Swann NHD-806 Cameras). Motion sensor is very sensitive, I have no need for remote email notification right now so I’m not sure how adjusting the sensitivity would help if you were interested in this feature. Navigation through the NVR is pretty simple, simple and straightforward. Also its expandable up to 8 cameras so I can add more if wanted / needed. This is my first security system so I have nothing to compare it to, but for the price point I’m pretty pleased. Installation wasn’t terrible but I made it simpler by adding the boxes and mounting the cameras to them. The POE is nice but had I known the cameras had the huge plug coming off of them I may have gone with a standard system (not sure how huge the cables are with those either though). The limitation (in my opinion) to a standard system is having premade cables and having to deal with the length you have, and also having separate power. With the POE you can run your own Cat5 to your own lengths and the power comes from the NVR through the cable. Also with this system I feel like I traded smaller holes in my house for the addition of the boxes, but I’m okay with it since it gives a nice place to hide the cabling. I’ll try to update this review after some time has gone by and the system has gotten some use.

I had been looking a long time for a excellent NVR. I thought this one was it although reviews were mixed. The manual for the software is very cryptic and the software itself is not very self explanatory. Technical support was friendly but plot on being on hold for at least 10 minutes which if you buy, will know all too intimately. Programmed the system to alert me on my android which never worked, even using the preferred Gmail account that the instructions mention which I set up just for this system. It is possible to view cameras remotely via my android but it is intermittent at best and just usually just times out. One of my cameras 6 months into having this system has gone terrible and you have to send the camera to them along with proof of buy before they will issue you a new one. So here I am still waiting for a replacement camera. They tell me it takes about 10 business days to get my RMA processed. Not pleased at this point. Many many issues with this system.

Had a excellent experience with this camera system. I chose this one for the fact that even though it includes 4 cameras, I can expand it to 8 if necessary. The “power-over-ethernet” feature was also a MUST (basically the cameras are powered over the same ethernet cables that connect them to the receiver).
The images were very clear. It was pretty simple to get the remote-viewing software running on my android-based Samsung S3 phone. I also have the output going via HDMI to my TV, which was extremely straight forward.
The 1TB storage seems more than enough for me. With the 4 cameras continuously recording it will store over a month worth of footage, which is way more than I need anyway.
    Overall very satisfied.
