For 160 bucks, this is a excellent, nice system. I can see why it’s marked down, but, from its so-called list price. More expensive NVR’s will deliver more picture quality, so be sure this is what you want.
It comes with extension cables to connect the 4 included cameras. I reckon they are 50′ each but I didn’t measure them.
They can be readily extended with extra cables which are no harder to run, folks, than Cat5.
Also comes with a power adapter (for up to 4 cams). You don’t run separate power to each camera; you will need to drill oversize holes in your wall to get the cable connectors through. (maybe 1/2″ holes). It does not come with software. You download that from Swann.com, once you find it. The directions to get going online are nearly non-existent, except for smart phones. But you can find them if you look on the site, including for desktops and laptops. This unit uses SwannViewLink. Not to be confused with about a dozen other Swann web products.
It has a nice wizard to lead you through initial hardware set up for local operation. That’s a plus.
It has a cool UID (unique id? user id?) system that allows very simple setup to view on SwannViewLink (over the web). You don’t need to use the bar-code, recognition system that they tout online, but presumably you can use it. I didn’t try it because I don’t have a smart pad.
It will not natively talk with other Swann NVR client software, oddly. So that means you may have to have multiple apps on your computer to watch various systems. I have a Swann NVR at work and DVR at my summer place. There is a browser add-on that may allow your to avoid having to install the swannviewlink app entirely. It seems to have the same functions.
    Things that bug:
    * The picture quality is only honest at best; its noisy on the supplied HDMI cable. This is no 1 MP or better picture, nor is it like “near DVD”. It probably is better than ancient-school analog broadcast TV. See the attached B&W file.
    * There is no way to focus the cameras… So hope that the factory focus is what you want (soft). They really should have provided a way to tweak the focus.
    * There is no way to turn on/off the IR lamps. They are simply on their own photo cell. When they come on: You go to B&W at night (B&W is very clear by the way compared to the supplied color).
    * the software claims to ‘convert to Avi” so you can view recorded footage as AVI. Nope. It doesn’t do this for footage you grabbed from your client. Tried this on two different Win7 PC’s. The “native” format is H.264, they say. So far, no success. The files save, but they are not view-able in common PC video applications. They should provide a working converter for their files.
    * Captured Stills: save as BMP. (odd), not as JPG.
    * The DVR doesn’t seem to be able to save stills at pre-sequenced intervals to the drive. It will an email out with a still each 10 minutes (or less) if you wish. but won’t do it locally? So, if you want stills, you have to have them sent to you. (???)
    * The DVR won’t save over a local network, only to an internal drive (not included). But of course, it wants to be on your local network.
    * It has a USB port for a drive, but it won’t power/connect to a quality portable drive, at least without a HD installed inside the DVR itself. I have yet to try it with a USB Stick. It looks as if you can archive your stuff (from the not-included HD) using the PC client but.
    * The supplied cameras are not a perfect match for the 960H format which this DVR want to use. Images are somewhat distorted (elongated) with the supplied cameras. The DVR appears to also deal with D1 format, by the way. At least on photo’s you can right this with decent editing software.
I’ll try to provide more information as I get more experience with this system. It has some issues, but for the price, it delivers a pretty excellent value.

    Fantastic product for the money.

I was looking for a 4 channel system to cover my small property and keep and eye on my motorcycle and porch when I’m at work.

    This does the trick!

I finished up only needing 3 cameras to cover outside and used the 4th inside to cover my front door (only entry point). Fantastic quality images keeping in mind they aren’t high definition.

I have 2 complaints that will not result in me lowering the star rating.

    1) when switching to and from night vision, there is a very audible click. No problem outside, huge problem if you have a camera in your living room when it constantly switches to and from night vision because of the TV. I solved this by tapin over the light sensor. Unfortunately this means night vision bw images only, but it’s still very clear even in the day.

    2) This product mentioned no where that it came with cables for the cameras. I was fully expecting to have to buy cables, so I did. When I received the box it finished up having 4 50ish ft cables to wire the cameras. This may make someone mad if they bought 4 cables as an add-on.

Luckily for me, I want to run 4 more cameras inside anyway, so it was not a waste.

Overall I’m very pleased with the product and it’s ease of setup. I never looked at the directions once and have everything working perfectly even viewable from my phone using a dynamic dns service.

Have had these for 2 months and like! Can watch my home on my phone or office computer, get emailed motion alerts..very excellent quality. Fortunately had a friend that knew how to install wires inside the house. Unbelievable length in the chords provided. Wish I’d gotten a long time ago!
